José Antonio Requejo Santos, Jayne Taylor and Rafa Botello Jiménez win the Ciudad de Arrecife Marathon Lanzarote 2008.
Saturday, the 29th of November, we celebrated the 19th Edition of the Lanzarote Marathon, that was taking place for the third time in the capital of the island, the Ciudad de Arrecife, Organized by Club La Santa, the Sports Department of both the Lanzarote Cabildo and the Arrecife Town Hall, supported by “Centros Turísticos de Lanzarote”, the event was sponsored by Coca Cola, SIS, Costa Calero Talasoterapia and Martín Martín Arquitectos.
At 10.00 a.m., after the successful Marathon Kids race, over 850 athletes took the start of the race on a course of 10,550 m – some to run one loop (1/4 marathon), others two (1/2 marathon) and the remaining to cover the whole mythical distance of 42,195 km (4 loops)
The 23 year old Spanish José Antonio Requejo, from Burgos, won easily and set a new course record at 2:24:06.
Veteran Brit Jayne Taylor won the ladies race in 3:10:21
The Paralympics athlete (11th in Beijing) Rafael Botello Jimenez (29 years old, from Barcelona) impressed both participants and spectators with his incredible speed all along the four loops. He crossed the finish in 1:47:44, definitely setting a high record for the wheelchair category.
About an hour later, the French triathletes with adrenoleucodystrophy would also finish the race – showing again that you can reach your goals, as long as you fight for it.
Another extraordinary performance was made by the wheelchair athlete Francisco Toledo Gomez from Lanzarote: this man used a basketball wheelchair to cover the ¼ marathon, and though the Challenger seemed to be far too much an effort, he would by no way abandon and did reach the finish tower. Congratulations and applause by all present spectators and a special welcome not only by race manager Kenneth Gasque but also by sponsor of the wheelchair category, Martin Martin.
Well done Fran, and thanks to Martin Martin for promoting this special category.
The ½ Marathon was won by Dailos García from La Palma (1:12:21) and Hasna Bahom (1:20:52)
As to the ¼ Marathon, the young Francisco José García Viñoly from Lanzarote finished first (0:34:27) as did Irish Aoife Brady (0:38:31) followed by the 12-year old Summer Ibrahim (0:41:05), a British girl living on the island.
The Marathon by Teams also had quite a success: this year, ten teams registered and had good fun long the loop they ran together (the sum of the four times would make the marathon result).
Some people participated walking the ¼ marathon distance, enjoying the atmosphere and being part of the celebration, Thanks to all for choosing Lanzarote to come and race a marathon festival!.
