The 23 year old Spanish José Antonio Requejo, from Burgos, won easily and set a new course record at 2:24:06.

José Antonio Requejo will try to win the Marathon

The Ciudad de Arrecife full Marathon on Saturday 29th of November will have a high level of competition this year... here is just another contender to Stewart Macdonald, the defending champion, if he confirms assistance. Stewart's time was 2:30:57... and Requejo's time in Arrecife two years ago was 2:34... when he finished second, behind his landmate Jorge Aubeso (who is not starting here this year)

Chema Fernández Atienza

He is one of the most frequent participants into our Marathon Festival. Indeed, he is always here, and if exceptionnally his health dis not let him race, he was there to encourage the other runners.
In January, José María (his nieckname is Chema) won the Meridian Island Mountains Marathon in El Hierro. But if you want to see more if his results, just have a look under "Runners" or on this link.

Anja Helin celebrates her 200st Marathon!!

This Finnish runner is very proud to tell us that the Ciudad de Arrecife Marathon of Lanzarote will be her number 200.... She is 55 years old and member of the Finnish club Hajyt. She sends all of us her best regards from the cold north, back in Uusikaupunki in Finlandia. We will definitely give her a warm applause when we will see her crossing this 200st Finish line!!!

25th marathon race this year... 150 and 225 in total...
Barbro and Jan Paraniak, both marathon runners, (and a married couple) from Sweden, will be back at Lanzarote, once again, for another marathon race.
Barbro will do her 25th marathon for this year in Lanzarote, which will be her 150th marathon in total.
Jan will do his 25th marathon for this year, i.e. a total of 225 marathon runs for him. He actually did his nº 200 last year in Lanzarote. More on http://jan-barbro.paraniak.se

Gregorio Cáceres Morales will also race the half marathon.
This Lanzarote born triathlete is the best in his sport on the island, with a 5th place at Ironman Lanzarote 2008 and a 6th place at Ironman Wisconsin 2008.
In order to take it easy with this commencing of the new training season, Gregorio has chosen to race the half marathon distance instead of the full one on the 29th of this month. José Carlos Hernández will run the half marathon
The fastest runner of Lanzarote and probably of the Canary Islands, José Carlos is also the designer of the Ciudad de Arrecife Lanzarote Marathon race course, and he works close together with the race organization.

Aroa Merino Betancor (on ths pic with José Carlos after last year’s marathon) was the only female representative and Finisher of the Canary Islands at the Ironman World Championship in Kona last October. She will also Stara her training season with the marathon event.

Canarian Champion Marathon and Half Marathon both in 2002 and 2003
3 times winner of the Multiterrain 3 stage Marathon (2004, 2006 and 2007) organized by Club La Santa in June each year.

Mulugeta Serbessa, our Lanzarote Marathon winner in 2003 and 2004 comes back
Mulugeta, a medical doctor, has won many races in Chech Republic where he lives. His personal best is 2:18:01-Prague 2004. He also won some international marathons such as Calviá - Mallorca (2:22:43), Slovaquia and Jacksonville, USA.
In Lanzarote (Costa Teguise) his times were:
2003: 2:30:57 /2004: 2:30:33
This time, his brother Habtamu Serbessa, who studies at university in Ch. Rep., will come with him - but Habtamu will race the half or quarter marathon. Habtamu's personal best on 10K is 31:08.

Rafael Botello Jiménez - the Beijing Paralympics athlete will also come to Lanzarote.
The race organization is very proud to announce the participation of this impressive athlete. Rafael is 29 years old and will come to our volcanic island to be part of our race, after coming back from New York!. Rafa Botello is the 2nd fastest Eureopean athlete on the marathon distance (1h22,18) behind the famous Heinz Frei.

Stéphane Rouyer will take the start of the 2009 Marathon
The French triathlete, Stéphane Rouyer, 46 years old (born on the 11th of January 62) suffers leucodystrophy, an illness that affects his legs for which he has to race in a wheelchair.
In France, Stéphane colborates with his sponsors together with Zinedine Zidane; in Spain, he is part of the international team Triwww, run by the Club La Santa representative in Madrid, www.roadtolasanta.com
Last May 2008, Stéphane became an Ironman Lanzarote Finisher with a time of 11:52 (417th overall - marathon time of 2:49)
