Brits Macdonald & Crombie-Hicks win 18th Lanzarote Marathon

Today 1st of December over 700 athletes gathered in the capital of Lanzarote, ARRECIFE to join the 18th Lanzarote Marathon, the Ciudad de Arrecife Lanzarote Marathon.

This morning, the sun was there again to allow everybody to enjoy a beautiful race day. Rafael López started a minute ahead of the other athletes, to enable him to have a smoother race in his wheelchair. (Rafael ended in a wheelchair after a motorbike accident two years ago, but immediately reacted joining wheelchair athletics) Then the big group took the start, at 10 a.m., including the local favourite José Carlos Hernández Cabrera, who helped design the race course, much flatter than last year, and Gregorio Cáceres Morales, Spanish Long Distance Triathlon Cup Champion, and among the ladies, the Lanzarote (tri)athlete, Aroa Merino Betancort.

A huge amount of spectators attended the start this year. And as usually, just after the adults left, the Marathon Kids took place, with hundreds of children from very small to teenagers who performed all well, though no times were taken. They all received a T-shirt and a medal upon crossing the finish line.

Not only professionals but increasing numbers of just runners enthusiasts attend the Lanzarote Marathon every year, as the good climate of Lanzarote is definitely one of its main attractions early December.  New this year was also the possibility to win a trophy if running by teams of 4 in the ¼ marathon. In that case, all four times were summed to get a total Marathon time.
